IPA Day 2019

It’s one of our favorite random, made-up holidays at CMBC: IPA Day is on Thursday, August 1! We don’t know where it came from, but we’re excited nonetheless!

A day to celebrate one of the most popular and widely-imbibed beer styles known to man? You know that’s something we can totally get behind.

We caught up with the Brew Crew to find out which of our tasty IPAs is their favorite, and how they will be celebrating.

Check it out!

Steve and Kyle Back Again!

If you watched their last video, it should come as no surprise that our captain for our BikeMS: City to Shore team, Steve Briggs, and our “unofficial co-captain”, Kyle Konopka gave us too much material for one video.

So… Steve & Kyle are back again! This time, they let potential riders know what to expect for the ride.

It should come as even less of a surprise that the staff at Straight to the Pint has never done the ride themselves, as they’re usually strapped to their desk, furiously working on these entertaining and informative blogs; however, from what we understand, it’s truly an awesome day. The rest stops set up along the route have some excellent food, all of the volunteers are helpful and considerate, and the throngs of people waiting in Ocean City to cheer everyone to the finish line are wildly supportive.

But don’t take our word for it. Listen to what Steve & Kyle have to say! (And there’s still time to sign up for the ride! Click here!)

Old Salt with Yuzu

Well… our Old Salt returns, and, judging from the ingredients in this summer’s gose, he’s been making a tour of eastern Asia, returning with beautiful and exotic citrus fruits.

Nope, it’s not a lemon. It’s not an orange. It’s not a Beetlejuice-shrunken grapefruit and it’s not a strangely discolored lime.

“Dear God, what is that thing?!?” cries the person we just made up for this blog.

That, dear reader, is a yuzu.

“A… wut…?”

No, not a wut. A yu-zu.

And it pairs perfectly with a salty, fruity, and immensely refreshing gose.

"The people that I work with are just as nice as can be."

Welcome Kevin!

The awesome thing about the position of greeter — those friendly people who check your ID when you walk through the door — is that it’s a perfect fit for people with a number of different backgrounds.

We’ve had teachers looking to make an extra buck over the summer — when they guide tours, they know how to educate a crowd.

We’ve had college students — they know how to cram their brains with a bunch of information.

And we’ve had retired law enforcement — don’t even think of sneaking a fake ID past them.

Our most recent greeter, Kevin Cassidy, is one of the latter.

“Kevin reached out to me looking for something to keep him busy with his semi-retirement,” says Tasting Room General Manager Chris Costello. “With his background in law enforcement, our greeter position was the perfect fit — no bad IDs will be getting in this summer! Kevin’s naturally outgoing personality and garrulous nature were just the icing on the cake.”

Welcome Kevin!

“It should finish balanced, with malt presence, strong sour notes, fruity like undertones, just a hint of that balsamic-y richness, subtle oaken quality.”

The “Z” Is Silent

If comedy is tragedy plus time, great beer is good beer plus time. (Unless it’s an IPA. Always drink an IPA as fresh as possible.)

But we certainly gave The “Z” is Silent a lot of time. Like… a lot a lot.

Let’s put it this way: when we first razcked The “Z” is Silent into red wine barrels, Fetty Wap had just come into our lives, and everyone was at the theater watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Our youngest current production member was too yzoung to come to the brewery, and we were closing out a year in which we’d produced 4,700 barrels — a number we passed on May 13th of this year.

Suffice it to say, we’ve been working on this beer for a long time.

Crusty Reviews

We’ve been brewing Crusty Barnacle since 2013, and it’s been a huge hit with both fans and the Brew Crew alike.

Originally brewed by the Tasting Room as a team beer, Crusty Barnacle is an American Pale Ale fermented entirely with Brettanomyces lambicus, and it will make you rethink everything you thought you knew about our good friend Brett.

Since it’s the only fermenting yeast, it gives off more fruit than funk, more juice than barnyard. You’ll get notes of cherry pie, pineapple, apricots, and some floral characteristics. Because of that, we use Amarillo, Centennial, and Citra hops — all primarily citrusy in nature — to bring out more of those fruit-forward flavors.

Read what our devoted fans had to say about Crusty Barnacle!

BikeMS: City to Shore — Michael

Some of the best fundraisers on our BikeMS: City to Shore team began exactly as you are — a fan of CMBC.

Three-year veteran Michael Malinowski liked the cut of our jib — or, more accurately, the cut of our bike jersey — and decided to sign on as a rider. Since then, he’s raised over $20,000 to help fund Multiple Sclerosis research.

Now, we’re not saying that every single one of our fans need to raise $20,000… but wouldn’t that be awesome?!? The minimum you’d need to raise is $300 — a number that’s totally doable. You probably have that much in your couch cushions.

Either way, if you’re thinking about signing up for the team, check out the video below to see why Michael does it. Then, head over to our BikeMS: City to Shore page and sign up for the team!

"I love having seasons. That’s something we didn’t really have in San Diego.”

Welcome Jake!

The common saying is “Like father, like son,” but our newest barback, Jake Schriver, is following in his mother’s footsteps in more ways than one.

“Jake came highly recommended to me,” says Tasting Room General Manager Chris Costello. “His mom works here in the winter months. Jake is passing through town for summer before heading up to NYC. He’s looking to learn a lot more about craft beer to fatten his resume for potential jobs in New York. He’s an ox! On his first day, he was carrying two full kegs at a time across the Tasting Room. We quickly pointed out the hand trucks that make that job much easier and safer.”

Welcome Jake!

Tiny Drink Umbrella: Cherry Limeade

We’ve been going at it pretty strong with our Tiny Drink Umbrella series, with the first iteration with blueberries and raspberries hitting the Brewtique in July of last year. We followed it up with the passionfruit, orange, and guava version in September and the pomegranate, dark cherry, and black currants version March.

We’re back at it again with the Tiny Drink Umbrella, and, this time around, longtime fans of the brewery may notice a familiar fruit combination.

BikeMS: City to Shore — Steve & Kyle

We’re not saying that our BikeMS: City to Shore team is a bunch of goofballs, but… we’re not not saying that, either.

Don’t get us wrong, here: they’re awesome goofballs. They’re dedicated goofballs. But… yeah. They’re goofballs.

We love dedicated goofballs. And our BikeMS: City to Shore team is among the most dedicated goofballs you’re likely to find.

It takes some serious dedication to train for months. It takes some serious dedication to ride your bike for a hundred freakin’ miles. It takes some serious dedication to raise the amounts of money that these folks raise.

We’re extraordinarily grateful for our dedicated goofballs.

We got together with our Team Captain Steve Briggs and team veteran Kyle Konopka to find out why they love riding for our BikeMS: City to Shore team.

Check out the video below! And, if you’d like to join our team, we’d love to have you! Click here!
