The Simpsons

You don’t have to love The Simpsons to work here, but it helps.

It’s surprising that the little show on a fledgling network such as Fox made it past its first few seasons. After all, George H. W. Bush once said that he wanted “to make American families a lot more like the Waltons and a lot less like the Simpsons,” (and then the showrunners moved him and Bar across the street of Marge, Homer, and the kids). Now, the Simpsons are one of the few “nuclear families” (heh!) left on television. Their staying power truly is amazing, no doubt due to the strength of its fandom.

So, with the release of Krusty’s Partially-Gelatinated Non-Dairy Gum-Based Beverage on Saturday, we wanted to talk to the Brew Crew to find out what’s made this show the long-running juggernaut that it is.

What are your favorite memories of The Simpsons? Why do you love the show?

Because, like Mount Everest, it’s there. It’s been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. And it just dawned on me how many of our employees are younger than the show. I always loved any character voiced by the late, great Phil Hartman.

What are some of your favorite episodes?

Any episode with a McBain clip is high on my list — “Little Suzie’s growing up”. I always loved the James Bond spoof, “You Only Move Twice” — the hammock district scene is hilarious. “Marge vs. the Monorail” is a classic. “A Streetcar Named Marge”… I guess any of the musical episodes.

Favorite quotes?

I’ve said so many of these so often that I can’t remember if they’re mine or if they’re from the show.

I haven’t seen an episode past season 14, so any and all of my Simpsons memories and quotes come from before the show turned to shit, so I have mostly really positive memories. The Golden Era (Seasons 3-8) just has hit after hit after hit. When FXX was created and started showing the series regularly, and specifically the older seasons, it was revolutionary for me because I hadn’t seen any Simpsons in a good 5-10 years. When FXX is airing that sweet spot, I don’t care how recently I’ve seen an episode, there’s a damn good chance it’s on in the background at first before I wind up putting way too much attention towards it.

What are some of your favorite episodes?

Too many to list, but “Itchy and Scratchy Land” from season 6 is one of my favorite episodes, and “The Old Man and the Lisa” from season 8 is classic. I want to name a beer “Dental Plan” just so people who know it will instantly read to themselves “Lisa needs braces”, which comes out of season 4’s timeless “Last Exit to Springfield“. “Flaming Moe’s” from season 3 has probably my favorite Simpsons songs of all time, rivaled possibly only by the Planet of the Apes spoof song in season 7’s “A Fish Called Selma.” I would be an asshole if “Marge vs the Monorail” wasn’t mentioned, because (in my best Phil Hartman voice) by golly it put them on the map! And “Cape Feare” is absolutely timeless and introduced me to the H.M.S. Pinafore, which I’m not going to lie – I’ve listened to a few times on Spotify. Ask Hank to sing it, he does a beautiful rendition of it.

Favorite quotes?

Once again way too many to list, but a couple off the top of my head:

Hey! I thought I told you to stop licking my windows.
— I know. You told me.
And when I woke up this morning, I said, “Barney, you’re not gonna lick that man’s–“

“When I grow up I”m going to Bovine University!”

“I moved here from Canada and they think I slow, ey?”

What are your favorite memories of The Simpsons? Why do you love the show?

As an educator, I love the show for its satire on the education system. Mandatory testing, chicks in science, the gifted and talented, book banning, teachers’ unions… it goes on and on! When teaching education pedagogy at the college and university level, I frequently used Simpsons clips to provoke discussion.

What are some of your favorite episodes?

Too many to name ONE favorite! I recently saw the episode where Lisa is calling the Corey Hotline at $4.95 a minute to hear, “…some words that rhyme with Corey…” and it just made me laugh out loud!

Favorite quotes?

“Lisa needs braces!”
“I’m Troy McClure. You might know me from…”
“Do you find something funny about the word, tromboner?”

I remember when it first came on back in middle school, Bart Simpson t-shirts were banned — BANNED! The powers-that-be didn’t like his underachiever, eat-my-shorts mentality, and I, ever the rule-follower (back then, at least), dutifully followed the rules. Well… there was that… and the fact that we lived in the woods and didn’t have cable back then and Fox 29 was an interference-laden mess. I didn’t really get to watch until I got cable in college.

What are some of your favorite episodes?

Definitely The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson. Barney borrows Homer’s car and leaves it parked in New York, getting a bunch of tickets in the process. But Barney shows up at Moe’s (in the trunk of a limo) and says, “The only thing I remember about the last two months was giving a guest lecture at Villanova. Or maybe it was a street corner.” I was at Villanova when that episode aired, and it was HUGE news around campus. This was ten years after our first National Championship and about another twenty before our next one, so the fact that anyone remembered Villanova for anything was a shock to us.

I literally quoted this exchange the other day, and I was a little surprised to find out that it was from the same ep:

Now, what do you have to take that awful taste out of my mouth?
— Mountain Dew or Crab Juice.
Blecch! Oh, jeez! I’ll take the Crab Juice!

And then, of course, just about every word out of Ralph Wiggum’s mouth:

Me fail English? That’s unpossible!
Hi, Principal Skinner! Hi, Super Nintendo Chalmers! I’m learnding!
My cat’s breath smells like cat food.
This is my swing set. This is my sandbox, I’m not allowed to go in the deep end.

What are your favorite memories of The Simpsons? Why do you love the show?

I can remember how awesome it was to stay up late on Sunday nights. The night would start with The Simpsons at 8pm, then I was allowed to watch some early Jim Carrey action on In Living Color. He’s one of my idols. Also, I’m probably one of the few employees here who’s been watching it for 30 years.

What are some of your favorite episodes?

All of the Halloween episodes — Treehouse of Terror. I’ve seen them all. I love Mr. Plow — of course, I know the song by heart. That episode where Barney went sober, “Days of Wine and D’oh’se”. Classic. Every single chalkboard gag was awesome. Oh, and I loved the whole saga when Sideshow Bob wanted to murder Bart!
