The Official Blog of Cape May Brewing Company
You absolutely must keep this beer cold.

The Bog. In cans.

You’ve heard the phrase “labor of love”. It’s one of those things that you do for the love of it. Because it’s part of your soul. It’s arduous, fraught with danger, and pitfalls abound, but you do it anyway.

Yeah. That’s what getting The Bog into cans has been for Cape May Brewing Company.

We love this beer. We love that you love this beer.

We love that we’re finally able to bring you this beer.

Return of The Bog

(Cue John Williams music: Duhhh, duhhh, duh-duh-duh, Duuhhh, duhhh, duh-duh-duh, Duuhhh, duhhh, DUN-DUN-DUN DUUNNNNN….)

Star Wars Day is almost here — May the Fourth be with brew!

We’ve got a Jedi-worthy day planned for all of the Star Wars fans out there. Even if you don’t know an Ewok from Jar-Jar Binks (Hint: one’s adorable, the other is the most annoying thing in the history of the franchise), you’re still guaranteed to have a great time.

On Thursday, May 4th, from 5-8pm, we’ve got a special Star Wars Pandora station cued up. You’ll have a great time in our photobooth, and be able to make your own lightsaber — it won’t actually work because, well, that technology was only available a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.

We’ve got two One-Offs in store, and you’ll be able to choose between the Light Side and the Dark Side of the Force. We’ve got a blue raspberry-infused Demisemi for the Obi Wans out there and a lime-conditioned Bog for Vaders.

For the Padmés and Anakins — and the Chewies stuck driving — we’ve got a special Yoda Soda. A green soda with a distinctly orange flavor, it will bring you the wisdom of Yoda. Or, at least, quench your thirst.

Since this is the second year we’re doing this, it’s kind of a sequel. It’s May the Fourth Be With Brew: The Return of The Bog!

Our perennial fan-favorite cranberry shandy returns just in the nick of time. It’s one of our most sought-after brews, and we can barely keep it on tap once it hits the Tasting Room. A tart cranberry wheat beer blended with lemonade, The Bog is the most drinkable summer shandy this side of that freaky cantina on Tatooine. (We promise not to play the worst piece of music John Williams ever composed.)

Come in costume and be entered for your chance to win a CMBC Swag Bag. Just grab a ticket from the greeter as you come in, and you could end up being decked out in all of your favorite CMBC swag.

See you there! And, until then, May the Fourth be With You!

It’s Gonna Be May

CMBC_May Releases

If April’s release of Bringing Sexy Bock didn’t give you enough late-90s flashbacks to last you a lifetime, pretty much existing at the beginning of May should do it for you. Justin Timberlake is EVERYWHERE! Unfortunately, he hasn’t been down to the brewery. Yet. We’re pretty sure that at some point, we’ll get him down here. Particularly if we keep naming beers after his songs. Bock Your Body? Dunkel in a Box? Well… probably not. But what we do have are these killer brews for May.

May 5 — Salty Lips
ABV: 4.7%  IBU: 10  Style: Gose
The name says it all! Salty Lips is a Gose — which is closely related to its tart cousin the Berliner Weisse — where using local ingredients from the Cape May Sea Salt Co brings out a slight touch of salinity. This refreshingly tart ale spent 2 days souring in the boil kettle to lower the pH to a pleasant acidity, then had coriander added with the local sea salt and hops before being fermented with a classic American Ale yeast strain. The saltiness strikes your palate before subsiding to a gentle tart bite, finishing with a yeast ester profile of peaches and honeydew, leaving you with a hint of the ocean on your lips.

May 12 — Summer Catch
ABV: 5.5%  IBU: 35  Style: Belgian Wheat
Welcome to summers at the Jersey shore. Soaking up some sun, hot days and cool nights, enjoying the beach, and just loving the heck out of life, make sure you take it all in with some Summer Catch. Citrusy and refreshing, this crushable Belgian-style wheat ale is sure to be your go-to drink all summer long. Citrus on the nose with an easy-drinking yet firm body, Summer Catch is our new summer seasonal aimed at the adventurous craft beer drinkers, yet approachable enough to encourage the yet-to-be converted consumer. At home on the patio during your next cookout, but also ready to be sipped all night long out with your squad, Summer Catch is your new summer ale.

May 19 — The Bog
ABV: 3.9%  SRM: 12  IBU: 9  Style: Cranberry Shandy
Sometimes we’ll create a beer because we’ve always wanted to make a certain style, other times it’s to fill a hole in our lineup, but what happens when we’re making our Cranberry Wheat and accidentally add too much cranberry making it too tart? We embrace it and turn it into a Shandy. What was supposed to be a one off batch has turned into one of our top selling and sought after beers, one that come end of spring we can barely keep in stock. The Bog has become the definitive South Jersey summer beer, a tart cranberry wheat beer blended with lemonade to create an uber-drinkable summer shandy. Designed to enjoy on those sweltering days, this beer is light and refreshing while still packing tons of flavor.

May 26 — Beets by May
ABV: 5.0%  IBU: 40  Style: American Pale Ale with Beets
The Bavarian Purity Law may reign in Germany, but here in the good ol’ U.S. of A., we put whatever we damn well please into our beer!  Couple this with our love of local Jersey ingredients — in this case, red and yellow beets — and you have our latest experiment with certified “Jersey Fresh” ingredients: Beets by May.  This classic American Pale Ale is specifically designed around the semi-sweet, earthy flavor of fresh beets, complemented by notes of pine, fresh grass, and a touch of orange citrus from the Bravo, Target, and Chinook hops.  Topped off with a distinctive color you can see from across the bar, this one simply can’t be missed!

Also back on tap and in bottles… APPLE BOMB! We know, we know… we let you down by not having it on tap the past few times you’ve been here. We’re ashamed and horrified. We’re pretty sure it’s why JT hasn’t visited, either.

Things You Should Know Before Drinking This Thanksgiving

This holiday may be all about the bird – and, you know, the gratitude – but beer should also play a starring role. Here’s why:

Pilgrims loved beer.

There’s a legend that the pilgrims only came ashore when their alcohol ran dry… funny, but also grounded in fact. Water was not safe to consume aboard the Mayflower, so beer was clutch. Enter tipsy English separatists. Remember: if your cornucopia is full of craft this holiday season, you’re only following tradition.

Native Americans also enjoyed beer.

It’s been long believed that colonists introduced American Indians to brewing, but recent studies suggest they already had it down, with corn as a main ingredient.

We’re making something special for Drinksgiving.

Traditionally, the day before Thanksgiving is the heaviest drinking day of the year. Of course, our customers aren’t looking to get wild — they prefer to remember the beer they’re drinking. So we recommend picking up a growler of something fun to sip with the extended family. Enter our One-Off Wednesday concoction for next week. We’re calling it Apple Pie, as this is our Apple Bomb brew conditioned with cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, allspice, and vanilla. It will hold you over through the holiday, since we’re closed on Thanksgiving. And it’s an appropriate choice, considering the libations served by Native Americans that first Thanksgiving season were likely also apple heavy.

And we’ve got growlers full of The Bog.

This is the beer on our menu — a cranberry wheat-based brew — that goes best with turkey, according to Head Brewer Brian Hink. “It’s light and refreshing with a bit of sweetness, so it goes well with the whole savory, rich, buttery feast,” he says. The Bog also pairs well with turducken, in case that’s more your speed.

Or, at least, it should. At last count, there were over 4,000 craft breweries across America, meaning we’ve got an endless supply of innovative options at our fingertips. And that’s one heck of a reason to toast before a turkey dinner, don’t you think?

The Bog is Back – Tomorrow!

Here’s a sure sign of summer – the return of The Bog.

This was an accidental brew. Every year around Thanksgiving, we make a cranberry wheat beer, and in November of 2013, we added too much cranberry. The final product was undrinkably tart, so we added lemonade. Voila: an uber-drinkable shandy, perfect after a hot day on the beach. Now, The Bog has become one of our fastest selling recipes.

“We have a hard time keeping it in stock,” says Lead Brewer Brian.

Some customers prefer drinking it on its own; and yes, by ‘some customers’ we don’t just mean lemonade-loving ladies, but macho, macho men.

“Guys don’t admit it, but they love it,” says COO Hank.

And some of you prefer to mix and match.

“I love pairing The Bog with Tower 23,” says Tap Room Manager Jim. “It’s the perfect blend of sweet and sour.”

However you like it, rejoice! The Bog is back starting tomorrow, in all its refreshing, 3.9-percent-ABV glory.
