Follow That Gull!
In 2017, we were honored to be asked to brew a handful of commemorative brews. Villanova University asked us to brew Demisemiseptcentennial Pale Ale for their 175th anniversary (and we thought we were through with having to type “Demisemiseptcentennial”), and the County of Cape May asked us to help them ring in their 325th year with a commemorative brew, Follow the Gull.
Both turned out excellently; however, one of them turned out so well that it’s truly become a favorite for everyone at the brewery.
Because of that, this week, we’re pleased to offer Follow the Gull in 16-ounce tall boys!
“It’s just so damn good!” says Director of Brewing Operations Jimmy Valm. “Seriously, many of the staff on the production team feel this is our best beer. It really is top notch, and we felt it was too good to let it fall by the wayside.”
The production floor goes a little crazy for this beer. In fact, Assistant Tasting Room Manager Dan Petela loves it, too. We found him sampling Follow the Gull as his shiftie earlier this week.
“I go crazy over it because it’s hoppy,” Dan says. “It’s not bitter, it’s quaffable. It’s great after a long day’s work — or a homebrew session. It’s what you want.”
“Yeah, it’s full of hops and it’s a low 5.5% ABV,” agrees Tasting Room Supervisor Caitlin Gard. “It’s effing delicious.”
Production Manager Brian Hink loves the low ABV, as well.
“I honestly think it’s our best beer,” he says. “At 5.5% I can drink the shit out of it, and it’s super hoppy — packed full of Citra, El Dorado, and Azacca for the dry-hop that brings this intense wave of citrus, peach, and grapefruit notes. It’s really tasty.”
Brewer Mark Graves is all about that hops blend.
“It’s got a really nice blend of hops,” he says. “All the flavors complement each other really well and it’s surprisingly refreshing for the hop bomb that it is.”
Brewer Andrew Ewing loves the hops, as well.
“This beer packs the big hop flavor of a Double IPA into an approachable, lower ABV IPA,” he says. “A fluffy mouthfeel combined with just enough bitterness create a flavorscape any hop lover will be into.”
So we canned up all those hops for you. And check out this can! You might follow that gull anywhere. The seagull is such an iconic bird for our area, adorning the signs along Ocean Drive, artwork throughout the area, and, indeed, our very own logo.
And with this hop-bomb of a beer, we wanted to give him the largest hop cone we could — and this guy’s not letting go. “Mine!”
“What I love about it — as someone born and raised in Cape May — seagulls are literally everywhere,” said Social Media & Design Alchemist Courtney Rosenberg. “I like that we’ve finally got one in our artwork. He’s holding the hop, and he’s got kind of a mischievous look on his face. You know how you used to get fries on the boardwalk, and you’d have to cover them because some rude gull would steal them? Yeah, this guy got his hop cone and he’s keeping it.”
Follow the Gull is on tap now in the Tasting Room and available in cans in the Brewtique and at better liquor stores throughout the area. Get yours today!
