Double Dry-Hopped White Caps
But there’s one that we wait with bated breath. One that we beg the brewers to bring back. One that we look forward to time and again.
Two words: White Caps.
Seriously, we all go a little crazy(ier) over this beer.
When the guys told us that, for our next limited can release, they’d be throwing even more hops at this already-hoppy brew, we knew we were in for something special.
“Whenever something this good comes around,” says our Director of Brewing Operations Jimmy Valm, “we naturally think what would happen if we did some more crazy shit to it and just have it take off like a monkey-navigated rocket car! That was basically our thinking here: ‘Hey, we’re brewers, we just love experimenting and asking “what if..?”’”
So… what if? What would happen if we gave it a dose of Galaxy and Nelson Sauvin?
The Citra and Mosaic, already hopping around the brew in abundance, play so well together. The citrus notes from the Citra mix well with the orange piney-ness of Mosaic.
“White Caps is already super fruity and tropical, and the Galaxy and Nelson Sauvin will just push it to a whole other level,” says Head Brewer Brian Hink.
The additional round of hops each play rather nicely with one in the first round. Galaxy and Mosaic complement each other while Citra and Nelson Sauvin each bring out flavors in each other.
“Galaxy is one of the most tropical hops out there, with this really nice peach and passionfruit thing going on,” Brian says, “and when paired with the Mosaic they make this harmonious blend absolutely beautiful. Citra and Nelson play perfectly off each other, with Nelson’s grape-y, gooseberry thing happening, which is a match made in hop heaven when played off Citra’s citrusy-limey-melony, beautiful, wonderful aroma. Throw them all together, and that’s just a blissful blend of dry-hops.”
“So with the second addition of Galaxy and Nelson Sauvin hops we’ll get a big tropical fruit kick, think papaya, mango, and passion fruit from the Galaxy and then a nice whiff of white grapes and gooseberry from the Nelson Sauvin,” he says. “So these two are going to really add to the complexity of this beer and take it up to a whole new crazy level.”
However, like our other limited-edition, Tasting Room Only releases, this one is limited to 100 cases, then it’s gone. Forever.
One of the reasons this beer is so limited is that Galaxy hops are insanely difficult to get ahold of. Not only are they the “it” hop right now, but they’re only grown in Australia.
But, that exotic nature lets us have a little bit of fun.
“We all know how much fun it is to be a bit of a tease, kinda show off a bit,” Jimmy says. “Well, this is like a beer version of bringing your milkshake to the yard.”
Brian loves that we’ve kept this one a bit limited.
“It really keeps you wanting more,” he says, “and yearning for that next release to come along to excite the senses again.”
Nonetheless, there’s a lot to love in this beer. It’s one of our best made even better.
“I love the complexity,” Jimmy says. “There’s just so much going on here with so many different hop characteristics present, that it just makes it a fun beer to drink.”
Brian tells us that it’s one of his favorite beers that we make.
“But DDH’d with Galaxy and Nelson?” he asks, incredulously. “Honestly there’s nothing more I could be looking forward to.”
Well, you don’t have to look forward to it for much longer, Bri. Neither do any of you.
