Books and Brews

The weather is getting warmer and we seem to be nearing the end of this lockdown — thankfully! So, whether you’re still staying at home or if you’ve decided to venture out and enjoy some of our recently reopened beaches, you’re probably looking for a decent book to read.

We decided to reach out to the Brew Crew to find out which books they love and which CMBC brew they think pairs the best.

Hopefully, you’ll find a new favorite book — and a new favorite beer — as we finish up the last few weeks of quarantine!

Director of People Operations Christine Bry

What are your favorite books? Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate, Educated by Tara Westover, and The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

Which CMBC beer pairs well with your choice? Key Lime Corrosion

Why does your beer choice pair well with this book? All three of these favorites of mine are about childhood — troubled, difficult, sour upbringings. Key Lime Corrosion pairs well because when that tart, sour, and beautifully lime flavor hits your lips, you might pucker, but you keep going back for more despite that, or you deal with it with a smile on your face!

Brewtique Manager Kaitlyn Smith

What is your favorite book? The Secret Life of Violet Grant by Beatriz Williams

Which CMBC beer pairs well with your choice? Always Ready

Why does your beer choice pair well with this book? This author is one of my favorites. She has such a way with writing about history and has so many fun easter eggs hidden in her books. This beer pairs perfectly because I am “Always Ready” for whatever fun story Williams has next.

Tasting Room Manager Danielle White

Which book are you reading now? The Garden Awakening by Mary Reynolds

Which CMBC beer pairs well with your choice? Crushin’ It

Why does your beer choice pair well with this book? This book pairs well with Crushin’ It because of its light and citrusy flavors. Crushin’ It is the perfect beer to drink while being in the garden and reading a good book.

Lab Manager Lauren Appleman

What is your favorite book? The Martian by Andy Weir

Which CMBC beer pairs well with your choice? Follow the Gull

Why does your beer choice pair well with this book? The movie was phenomenal, and the book dives even deeper into the science/technical stuff as well as the utter isolation (much like what many of us are feeling right now). Some people have a desert island beer, I have a stranded-on-Mars beer, and that beer is Follow the Gull. It is hoppy and refreshing and makes you want to go for another sip. The next thing you know, you’ve finished your 4-pack!

Tasting Room Supervisor Danielle Brasch

Which book are you reading now? House Arrest by K.A. Holt

Which CMBC beer pairs well with your choice? Always Ready

Why does your beer choice pair well with this book? This novel is about a teen who is Always Ready to take care of his mom and sick younger brother, even if it means making some difficult decisions. It is written in free verse making it a crushable read just like Always Ready!

Content Marketing Coordinator Scott Armato

What is your favorite book? The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Which CMBC beer pairs well with your choice? Bourbon Barrel-Aged Sawyer’s Swap

Why does your beer choice pair well with this book? If you recall from your high school days, beginning with Gatsby’s first party in chapter three, pretty much everyone in the book is completely hammered all the time. Fitz was a bit of a drunk himself — well… like everyone in the Lost Generation of writers, he was dangerously more than “a bit” — and it definitely shows through in his writing. (While it’s a Hemingway quote, I have a t-shirt on the way that says, “Write drunk, edit sober,” but I digress.) At over 10% ABV, I think everyone in the book would have loved Bourbon Barrel-Aged Sawyer’s Swap. (Well… maybe not Myrtle.)

Furthermore, while the source of Jay Gatsby’s money is frequently guessed-at and hypothesized throughout the novel, Tom hits the nail on the head when he says, “A lot of these newly rich people are just big bootleggers, you know.” Gatsby probably knew a thingertwo about bourbon barrels.

Which book are you reading now? Super System 2: A Course in Power Poker by Doyle Brunson

Which CMBC beer pairs well with your choice? Tan Limes

Why does your beer choice pair well with this book? Some friends and I have been having Saturday night online mixed-game poker tournaments, so I’m reading this book to improve my 2-7 Triple Draw, Razz, and Stud skills. Poker is a grind, and if you try to do too much too quickly you get yourself in a lot of trouble, so I’m drinking Tan Limes because, at 4.5% ABV, I can pace my drinking.

Brand Ambassador Stephanie Curtis

Which book are you reading now? Where the Crawdads Sing by D’Elia Owens

Which CMBC beer pairs well with your choice? Coastal Evacuation

Why does your beer choice pair well with this book? The girl spends her life ‘evacuating’ into the marsh to avoid others.. the OG social distancer.

AR and Credit Specialist Noelle Smuz

Which book are you reading now? I’m working my way through all of Stephen King’s books

Which CMBC beer pairs well with your choice? Key Lime Corrosion

Why does your beer choice pair well with this book? It’s my favorite right now, but I do wish I had some Mop Water. I know it’s almost summer but Mop Water goes well with the fall vibes these books have!

Cape Beverage Warehouse Manager Craig Tropp

Which book are you reading now? Cthulhu Mythos by H.P. Lovecraft

Which CMBC beer pairs well with your choice? Honey Porter

Why does your beer choice pair well with this book? A nice, slow sippin’ porter pairs well with any read. I’ve revisited Honey Porter lately — one of my favorite standbys — to sip while I page through the dark short stories of H.P. Lovecraft yet another time.

Sales Manager Scott McIntyre

Which book are you reading now? Macho Row: The 1993 Phillies and Baseball’s Unwritten Code by William C. Kashatus

Which CMBC beer pairs well with your choice? Crushin’ It

Why does your beer choice pair well with this book? Not only do baseball and summer beers go hand-in-hand, but “Crushin’ It” might have been the motto of that ’93 team. They led the National League in hits, runs, doubles, walks, and on-base percentage that season!

Brand Ambassador Mary DiLazzaro

What is your favorite book? The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell

Which CMBC beer pairs well with your choice? Cape May IPA

Why does your beer choice pair well with this book? The premise of the point is what trends “tip” to the point of popularity. It also delves into social issues and addresses other trends that didn’t quite tip. The IPA, like Cape May IPA, was the beer that helped launch the popularity of independent breweries. It’s unique aromas and tastes differ vastly from popular macro-breweries. You could even say the IPA was “The Tipping Point” for the craft brewing industry.

Brewtique Associate Christine Marsh

Which book are you reading now? 11.22.63 by Stephen King

Which CMBC beer pairs well with your choice? Follow the Gull

Why does your beer choice pair well with this book? Follow the Gull is my favorite IPA by CMBC. I pair it with this book because it is about a man who goes to the past to follow and kill Lee Harvey Oswald. I guess you could say that Lee is the Gull and the main character is… Following the Gull!

Greeter Barbara Bur

Which book are you reading now? Born to Run by Christopher McDougall

Which CMBC beer pairs well with your choice? Cape May IPA

Why does your beer choice pair well with this book? No, this book has nothing to do with Bruce Springsteen, but rather super-athletes that run crazy distances and impossible races. Just having discovered running a few years ago, it truly is inspiring and humorous all at the same time, so I just picked it up again for a second read. Cape May IPA is the perfect beer to pair with this book, because after races, there is nothing I look forward to more at the finish line than a Cape May IPA! Talk about motivation! That said, Cape May IPA is the perfect brew after any workout! Cheers!

Brand Ambassador Gavin McGee

Which book are you reading now? Dead Man’s Walk by Larry McMurtry

Which CMBC beer pairs well with your choice? Follow the Gull

Why does your beer choice pair well with this book? Follow the Gull is light but still packed with flavor, just like this Wild West cowboy book. No seagulls in this book, but the Texas Rangers are following the Gulf of Mexico for a great deal of the story.

Brand Ambassador Matthew Weber

Which book are you reading now? Phasma by Delilah S. Dawson

Which CMBC beer pairs well with your choice? Devil’s Reach

Why does your beer choice pair well with this book? Phasma’s ambition has a long reach, and she is a strong warrior who would need a strong beer.

Culinary Ops, Soda Guru, and Cellarman JP Thomas

Which book are you reading now? Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J. K. Rowling

Which CMBC beer pairs well with your choice? Tan Limes

Why does your beer choice pair well with this book? I just finished this play/book. It was a quick, easy read that was very enjoyable. Tan Limes is an easy-drinking beer that goes down quickly. I haven’t really read much since school, I used to read a book every summer. I was a big Michael Crichton fan back then. I remember reading The Andromeda Strain, Sphere, and, of course, Jurassic Park. I think I started but never finished Timeline. To be honest, I think I might crack a can of Tan Limes, pick that one back up and give it a full read.

Which book are you reading now? Whoever Fights Monsters by Robert Ressler and Tom Shachtman

Which CMBC beer pairs well with your choice? Follow the Gull

Why does your beer choice pair well with this book? Everyone is likely more familiar with Joe Douglas and his book Mindhunter that details criminal profiling and tracking down serial killers. If you’ve seen the show, the character Bill Tench is based on Robert Ressler who was a key figure in starting the Behavioral Sciences Unit at the FBI. In Whoever Fights Monsters, you get to hear Ressler’s stories of working in the FBI and going after notorious killers. He’s got his own unique background and stories to tell so I definitely recommend it even if you’ve read similar books. This book pairs well with Follow the Gull because while true-crime material is heavy (like the 325 pounds of hops in this recipe!), it’s still juicy and easy to consume.

Sales Manager Paul Minore

Which book are you reading now? Coach to Coach by Martin Rooney

Which CMBC beer pairs well with your choice? Crushin’ It

Why does your beer choice pair well with this book? It’s a story about teaching, encouraging, and enlightening. Whether you coach an actual sport or you are the ‘coach’ of your family or friends, there is some great wisdom in this book written by a man with years of coaching experience at the highest level. Crushin’ It fits the vibe and message of this book. Seize the day, be a good person, Crush It!

Whichever book you’re currently reading, you’ll need a CMBC brew to complete the experience. Head over to our online store for curbside pickup or delivery, or check out our Beer Finder for a retailer near you!
