Beertender Appreciation Day!

World Bartender Day is February 24th, so we figured that this was the perfect time to express our appreciation for those folks behind the bar, slinging pints all day: our Beertenders.

While the typical bartender needs to know how to make every drink known to man off the top of their heads, our Beertenders have an even more herculean task: they need to know every single variety of hop, how each of them acts when in combination with every single other variety of hop, an endless list of malts, how they act with each other, how they act with the hops, how those flavors change based upon which yeast is used, how most of that information is completely upended in a sour beer, as well as every single beer ever created by Cape May Brewing Company or any other brewery on the planet so that when one of our visitors come through the door and says, “You know, I really liked this beer I had at this tiny brewery on Tierra del Fuego back in 1973. I don’t remember its name or what style it was or anything else at all about it, but do you have anything like that?” they can say, “Yes, you should try our 2020 Boughs of Barley, specifically the sherry variant, but you’re going to want to let it sit a minute and warm up a bit before you dive in because that’s going to release the flavors and aromas that most closely resemble that Tierra del Fuegian beer you had in 1973.”

And they do exactly that. Every. Single. Day.

Because they’re freakin’ rock stars.

So, to celebrate World Bartender Day, we caught up with eight current and former Beertenders to find out what they love about working at Cape May Brew Co.

Tasting Room Manager/Former Beertender Jake Hauser

What did you love about being a Beertender at Cape May Brewing Company? One of my favorite things about being a Beertender was getting the opportunity to socialize and connect with people on slower days. Not only was it fun being able to chat with some of our regular customers, but also getting to know our crew from other departments when they would come in for shifties (pre-COVID, of course).

Has there ever been a time that you helped a visitor make a decision when it comes to our beer? I can’t pinpoint any particular moment, but non-beer drinkers are usually blown away by how much they enjoy The Bog!

Tasting Room Supervisor Rich Schmidt

What do you love about being a Beertender at Cape May Brewing Company? First and foremost, I love talking beer with our customers. Hearing their biases against certain beers always makes me laugh, but knowing how to change their taste buds is a pleasure. Plus, working for a great company like Cape May Brewing Company makes it a very fun job. And lastly, my coworkers make it a pleasure to come to work!

Has there ever been a time that you helped a visitor make a decision when it comes to our beer? I would say the typical, “I don’t like beer” or “I don’t drink beer”. I usually set them up with a fruity beer that we have on tap. That usually fixes their decision on beer!

Tasting Room Supervisor Danielle Brasch

What do you love about being a Beertender at Cape May Brewing Company? I love getting to meet people from all over! The Brew Crew is pretty awesome to work with, as well.

Has there ever been a time that you helped a visitor make a decision when it comes to our beer? Many times customers come in who are “not beer drinkers”. I love this challenge of turning them into one! The Bog always seems to be a hit with wine drinkers. Before they know it they want a second pint!

Tasting Room Supervisor Miles Kline

What do you love about being a Beertender at Cape May Brewing Company? Working at a rapidly growing brewery and seeing customers come back to get their favorite beers.

Has there ever been a time that you helped a visitor make a decision when it comes to our beer? A customer only liked wine and I was able to turn her on to Lady in Room #10 and she loved it.

Keg Holder/Beertender Avery Deane

What do you love about being a Beertender at Cape May Brewing Company? I am a big fan of having a good time so I love being able to facilitate just that for both familiar faces and strangers alike.

Has there ever been a time that you helped a visitor make a decision when it comes to our beer? My favorite beer, not just because it is one of my personal favorites, to try to turn people on to is Honey Porter. Since it is lighter than what most people would imagine a porter to be, it’s nice to show people that not all dark beers are big, scary, super bitter brews.

Beertender Maddison Devlin

What do you love about being a Beertender at Cape May Brewing Company? I love the atmosphere and the fun my coworkers and I have when we work alongside each other.

Has there ever been a time that you helped a visitor make a decision when it comes to our beer? For when the non-beer drinkers come in with their families, I typically steer them towards the lighter or sweeter beers.

Beertender Kaley Palasch

What do you love about being a Beertender at Cape May Brewing Company? I love getting to interact with our customers and doing what I can to make their CMBC experience a good one. It’s awesome having a job where I look forward to going to work every day. Not everyone gets to say that!

Has there ever been a time that you helped a visitor make a decision when it comes to our beer? There’s a good number of people out there who see “IPA” and automatically think, “Oh no, I won’t like that,” which I can understand since I’m not much of an IPA drinker myself, but there are some IPAs that people shouldn’t be scared to try. I’ve had plenty of non-IPA drinking customers that I’ve convinced to try Crushin’ It and have loved it. Our Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Milkshake IPA is another good example of an IPA I’ve been suggesting to non-IPA drinkers lately. Sometimes I’ll tell them about IBU and what it means: it’s something I always look for when deciding if I’d like to try a beer, so I like to pass along the useful information when I can!

Beertender Caitlyn Crain

What do you love about being a Beertender at Cape May Brewing Company? The customers. The customers make being a Beertender at CMBC fun. Getting to interact with them and listening to their opinions on the beers they try during their visit is what I look forward to. Some people are regulars and stick to what they know, but others get so excited when something new is on tap. The atmosphere at CMBC also makes work a lot more fun!

Has there ever been a time that you helped a visitor make a decision when it comes to our beer? When it comes to helping customers choose which beer they should order, I normally try to ask first what type of beers they like. If we don’t have that style on tap I always try to recommend the closest beer to that style. For people who aren’t too into beer (and when we don’t have a seltzer on tap), I try to recommend the lightest beer we have.
